The mission of the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) is to prevent osteoporosis, to promote lifelong bone health, to help improve the lives of those affected by osteoporosis and related fractures, and to find a cure.  NOF achieves its mission through programs of awareness, public and health professional education, advocacy and research.

NOF has identified key policy issues to help osteoporosis patients and those at risk.  Priorities include:

Creation of a national action plan

To elevate osteoporosis and bone health on the national health agenda and implement the recent Surgeon General’s Report on Bone Health and Osteoporosis, NOF advocates for federal support for the creation of a national action plan for bone health and osteoporosis.

Access to quality osteoporosis care

To ensure osteoporosis patients and those at risk for the disease have access to medications, testing and treatment options, NOF advocates for comprehensive private and public health insurance coverage.

  • Supports legislation that would reverse Medicare reimbursement reductions for certain osteoporosis tests, study reimbursement reductions’ effects on access to bone density testing and provide recommendations to increase utilization of osteoporosis testing by Medicare beneficiaries.  Click here to support the Medicare Fracture Prevention and Osteoporosis Testing Act of 2007 (H.R. 4206/S. 2702).
  • Supports legislation that would provide for a study and two-year moratorium on reductions in reimbursement for imaging services.  (S 1338/H.R. 1293 Access to Medicare Imaging Act of 2006)
  • Supports Medicare coverage of bone density tests for all individuals at clinical risk for osteoporosis.  (H.R. 2340 Medicare Osteoporosis Measurement Act of 2007) Click here to support H.R. 2340.

Comprehensive prevention and education

NOF advocates for federal and state funding of public prevention and education programs on osteoporosis and bone health.

  • Supports a national campaign to increase awareness and knowledge of osteoporosis and to make demonstration program grants to provide information and outreach for the prevention of osteoporosis.  Click here to support the Osteoporosis Education and Prevention Act of 2007.
  • Supports expansion of current WISEWOMAN demonstration program to additional states and provide eligible low-income, uninsured women screening and preventive health care services for chronic diseases, such as osteoporosis. (H.R. 2404 WISEWOMAN Expansion Act of 2007; S 1342, Section 1509 HeLP America Act) Click here to support WISEWOMAN legislation H.R. 2404.

Increased research funding

In an effort to find a cure for osteoporosis and improve the quality of life for those with the disease, NOF advocates for increased funding for the National Institutes of Health as well as for those at the Department of Defense.  In addition, NOF advocates for support for NOF's peer-reviewed research program.

  • Supports providing an increase for the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, the lead institute for bone research.
  • Supports increased funding for the Department of Defense research programs on osteoporosis and bone health.
  • Supports funding to expand NOF's peer-reviewed research grant program through the production of $1 commemorative coins to be minted in 2014 with a $10 surcharge, with one-half of the proceeds dedicated to NOF for this purpose (H.R. 2268 / S. 2883 - Mother's Day Centennial Commemorative Coin Act).
