Partial Reversal of Osteoporosis Testing Cuts Included in Congressional Health Reform Bill
On March 23, 2010 the President signed the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, “ H.R. 3590, that includes some relief from Medicare cuts to Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA), the imaging procedure accepted as the gold standard for preventing, diagnosing and treating osteoporosis. The legislation requires Medicare to reverse cuts in DXA reimbursement during 2010 and 2011 to no less than 70 percent of the 2006 rates and provide for a study and report by the Institute of Medicine on this issue. This allows continued access to a medical service vital to all those living with and at risk for osteoporosis.
Thank you for communicating with your Members of Congress on this issue. Because of you, we have achieved a victory for the improved bone health of all Americans.

On March 16 NOF brought together patients and health professionals from around the country to meet with Members of Congress on Capitol Hill to raise awareness of the physical and economic impact that osteoporosis and poor bone health have on the nation. Advocates came from Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Washington to share their stories and asked Congress to protect patient access to osteoporosis testing, create a National Bone Health Program and increase research funding. NOF brought patients and health professionals together last October to celebrate World Osteoporosis Day and is planning two more advocacy days on Capitol Hill again this spring, on April 27 and June 15.
Many of the advocates that have visited Capitol Hill are continuing to build relationships with their elected officials once they go back home through district office visits and by being a resource on osteoporosis and bone health policy issues.

Meet Jennie Image: Advocate for Bone Health

Jennie Image is a volunteer NOF support group leader in the Dallas, Texas area. She is an advocate for better bone health busy at work leading three support groups that are free and open to the public. Jennie is passionate about helping osteoporosis patients and those at risk to learn more about improving their bone health and how to live with the disease. Through her community involvement she is raising awareness of the importance of strong bones every day!
"During 2009, more than 90 people contacted me about the support group and a good number of those attended meetings. Some volunteered, and by October of that year, we were strong enough in numbers to organize a community event. On October 17, 2009 more than 40 participants walked 1.3 miles to raise $970 in support of NOF’s mission at the North Dallas Steps for Strong Bones® Community Walk at Crowley Park in Richardson, Texas."

May is National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month
NOF’s 2010 awareness and prevention campaign, Healthy Bones, Build Them For Life®, aims to increase awareness of osteoporosis and bone health among women and men of all ages and backgrounds.
Each May, NOF convenes a congressional briefing on Capitol Hill to mark National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month and inform Congress about the need for expanded bone health prevention and education programs. This year’s briefing will be held on May 20 and features Academy Award-winning actress Cloris Leachman as well as remarks by Members of Congress, medical experts and advocates for better bone health.
In addition to the congressional briefing, this year’s campaign will feature TV Public Service Announcements (PSAs) on ABC 7/WJLA-TV in the Washington, DC area through the month of May; our annual Silhouette Awards Dinner on May 19; and a live patient education webinar, How Strong Are Your Bones?, on May 27. Many other awareness and education events are taking place throughout the country as NOF partners and supporters celebrate osteoporosis awareness and prevention month in their communities.
